Why Do Some Trucks Have Double Rear Wheels?

DRW vs SRW

Ever asked yourself why do some trucks have double rear wheels? The technical term is “dual rear wheel”, called dually or DRW for short, and it all comes down to increase safety and stability when towing. With two wheels instead of one, a truck can distribute the weight of a payload more evenly and have improved stability when towing loads like horse trailers or large campers.

The double rear wheels also mean that if one of your wheels blows out on the highway you have a better chance of getting yourself and your cargo safely where you need to be and not stranded on the side of the road. A DRW truck will have higher maintenance costs because of the extra tires and may need to be registered as commercial vehicle even if you only have it for personal use. Basically, DRW trucks are optimized for heavy-duty towing and commercial use.

If you’re in a business that requires major towing capabilities, a dually truck is the way to go. While trucks like the Ford Super Duty F-350 are available in both DRW and SRW (single rear wheel) configurations, other commercial trucks like the Super Duty F-450, F-550, and F-650 Rollback tow truck are only available in DRW.

If you’re looking for a truck for personal use and trying to decided whether to go with a DRW or SRW truck, usually the single rear wheel option will offer more driver comfort. When unloaded, a DRW truck has a rougher ride and will hydroplane more easily than a SRW vehicle.
