Even if we don’t receive snow, traveling over the Christmas season may require driving in places where snow is prevalent. When winter arrives, you may need to replace your tires. There are winter tires and all-season tires, but they serve distinct functions. So, what’s the difference between winter and all-season tires? Winter tires include more slits in their tread to improve traction and a tread compound that keeps the tire flexible in cold weather. They also feature a unique tread pattern compared to all-season tires. Winter tires have a stopping distance of 30 feet, while all-season tires have 36 feet. Winter tires are also more grippy, allowing for quicker acceleration.

All-season tires are designed to perform on and off-road, in wet and dry situations, in temperatures of 100° F and 20° F. They can harden in near-freezing conditions, reducing traction. They feature a high level of puncture resistance for off-road driving, resulting in specified durability standards. These requirements are not compatible with winter weather traction.

How to find out if my tires are winter or all-season?

Look for the three-peak mountain snowflake logo on the sidewall of the tire to determine which tires are for winter. The Rubber Manufacturers Association designed this mark, which indicates that the tire has been qualified for heavy snow usage. All-season tires will be marked with the M+S symbol, which stands for mud and snow. This sign does not represent traction on ice, slush, or icy roads.

Get new tires at Akins Ford in Winder, GA

If you live in or around Winder, GA, and need tire replacement, give us a call.
