Worn Brake Pads<\/h3>\n

If your brake pads are getting worn out (either because of age or because you like to stomp on the brakes right before the red light <\/a>every time) that can cause a drop in pressure as the brakes have to press farther to work. You might also notice a loss in responsiveness when this happens.<\/p>\n

Leaky Brake Lines, Hoses, Wheel Cylinders or Calipers<\/h3>\n

While brakes can also be mechanical, pneumatic, or electromagnetic, the most common type in vehicles is hydraulic, which means that the system relies on having enough brake fluid to function. This fluid passes through many different systems (lines, hose, caliper, etc) and any of them can leak. Causes of the leak can range from general wear and tear to hitting something while you are driving. If you have brake fluid showing up under your car while parked, that is probably a sign of a major leak and should be checked on right away.<\/p>\n

While many parts of the brake system can simply weaken, some parts like steel brake lines can just rust. Steel parts of vehicles are usually coated in something to prevent rust, but that can wear out. This is especially true in northern climates where salt is used on the roads to prevent the build-up of snow and ice.<\/p>\n

Bleeder valves are a part of your hydraulic brake system that is designed to release brake fluid, like during service. If you’ve recently been in to have your brakes repaired, but your brake light is still showing up, you may just need to bring the vehicle back in to have the bleeder valve tightened the rest of the way.<\/p>\n
