The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning has been revealed, and Ford Motor Company is calling it the smartest, most innovative truck that it has ever built. This guide looks at how much the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning lineup will be able to tow when it arrives here in the Atlanta area later this year.

Towing Capacity of the F-150 Lightning

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning has a targeted maximum towing capacity of 10,000 pounds on XLT and Lariat trucks with the extended-range battery and Max Trailer Tow Package. Models equipped with the standard-range battery will have a targeted towing capacity of 7,700 pounds. For comparison, the maximum towing capacity of the conventional gas-powered Ford F-150 truck is 14,000 pounds.

Payload Capacity of the F-150 Lightning 

The 2022 F-150 Lightning targets a maximum 2,000 pounds of available payload capacity on standard-range models with 18-inch wheels. Trucks with the extended-range battery will have a maximum targeted payload of 1,800 pounds. Under the hood is a ‘frunk’ (or front trunk) that offers lockable storage with 400 liters of volume and up to 400 pounds of payload. Ford says it can fit two carry-on bags and one checked bag—or two sets of golf clubs if you’re heading out to the range.

What is the Tow Technology Package?

The available Tow Technology Package features a bundle of specialized technology that includes Pro Trailer Backup Assist, Pro Trailer Hitch Assist, Trailer Reverse Guidance, Trailer Brake Controller, Smart Hitch, Onboard Scales, Trailer Camera, and Smart Trailer Tow Connection. The new Pro Trailer Hitch Assist feature can automatically control steering, throttle, and brake inputs to help with hitching a trailer. This Tow Technology Package is standard on the F-150 Lightning Platinum and optional on the XLT and Lariat models.
