How to program a new remote key fob for Ford

The invention of remote keyless entry is one of those things that you don’t deem as necessary if you don’t already have one, but for those drivers who do have a key fob, they often can’t imagine having anything else.

A key fob is the actual mechanical part that is used to lock and unlock the vehicle. This is not the physical key, but the mechanism that unlocks the vehicle without using the key.

Key fobs are incredibly popular now and most vehicles come standard with remote keyless entry, especially Ford vehicles because Ford is typically three steps ahead of any other dealer in the automotive game.

As great as key fobs are, however, they are only a device, which means that things can go awry. For example, if your key fob dies you will likely need a new battery in the device. The fob can also malfunction to sound the vehicle’s alarm or panic system. This can be incredibly annoying for everyone near the vehicle. Luckily, not days, it is a lot easier (and more affordable!) to get a replacement key fob than it was years ago. You can get a replacement Ford key fob at just about any dealership or even at a specialty battery shop.

How to program a new remote key fob for Ford:

  • After you have your new key fob, get in the vehicle with the fob and the actual key, and close the doors.
  • Turn the key into an “on” position and press the lock button on the new key fob, then turn the key back into the “off” position
  • Repeat that three more times so you turn the key to “on” and “off: a total of four times. After you’ve turned the key to “off” for the fourth time, turn it back to “on”
  • You should hear the locks sound, which means you are then in programming mode. After you hear the locks, press the “lock” button on your remote again within 5 seconds. The locks will cycle on and off one more time to tell you that the vehicle is programmed.
  • If you press “lock” again on any other remote within 10 seconds of entering programming mode, those fobs will program as well.
  • When you are finished, turn the ignition to “off” to end the programming.
